8 of the top County Senior Players arrived at Droitwich GC on Wednesday 28th August to compete for the County Senior Matchplay title for 2019. The 8 players were made up of a number of familiar faces and a good sprinkling of newcomers to the senior ranks, so there was little previous form for the spectators to base their predictions on!

After day 1, the event had lost Bryan Swain (Stourbridge) who was narrowly beaten by Bill Thompson (Kings Norton) and had also lost Martin Mahon (Kings Norton) who had fallen to Duncan Macpherson (Worcester G&CC), one of the new faces. In the other matches Norbeth Salmon (Wharton Park) squeezed past Steve Green (Rose Hill), but the closest match was between Nigel Taylor (Evesham) and Tim Ball (Wharton Park) which went to the 2nd extra hole before Tim took the match.

Day 2 promised slightly better weather for the semi finals and final. Both semi finals were titanic struggles, and both went to the 18th, with Duncan Macpherson beating Bill Thompson by 1 hole, and Tim Ball winning the all Wharton Park semi final, also by 1 hole.

Thus the final would match County 2nd Team Captain, and regular County Senior Team player, Duncan Macpherson, against the newcomer, Tim Ball. Duncan went up early in the match and never relinquished his advantage, winning by 3&2.

During the presentation, Dave McGillivray thanked Droitwich GC for hosting the event over two days, and the members for allowing the County to use their course. He also thanked the greenstaff, the bar staff, the pro and the catering team for their role in making the event a huge success. Dave also thanked the two referees who had been on duty for the two days, Brenda Binnie and John Whitehead, and starter Dave McDermott.

In response, Duncan also thanked everyone involved for running the event, but particularly praised the green staff for the quality of the course, noting that the greens were simple the best he had played on all year.
