Moseley Pair win Captains & Guests Tournament

Stourbridge GC hosted the WUGC Captains & Guests Tournament on Monday 23rd September 2019.

Pairings from 18 golf clubs across Worcestershire arrived at Stourbridge GC to compete in the annual WUGC Captains & Guests event, hosted by WUGC President, Dave McGillivray. The format is 4BBB (pairs) stableford over 18 holes, and this year Stourbridge GC were kind enough to allow a shotgun start.

Whilst the weather was fine for the first 3 hours, the promised rain set in, making playing conditions quite tricky. However, this didn't appear to affect many of the pairings and scoring was generally very good. As all the groups returned their cards within a 15/20 minutes of each other, the rumour soon starting circulating that 44 points was the best score. Indeed it was, but this was carded by the Executive Team of Dave McGillivray & Colin Day, who knew that they wouldn't be allowed to take any of the prizes. Thus, all other scores were back in play.

7 pairs had 40 points or more; with 40s from Brian Marshall & Chris Jewkes (Evesham) and John Managn & Trevor Perry (Hollywood) and 41 points from Dave Bradshaw & Kevin Smith (Ombersley). 3rd place was to go to Bob Grindley & Mike Pugh from Stourbridge with 42 points, and 2nd place went to Rod Hazelwood & Keith Frencg from Fulford Heath, also with 42 points, but with a better last 3 holes. The clear winners were Andy Nicholson & Andy Sewwll from Moseley GC with an excellent 43 points.

Other prizes went to Dave Bradshaw & Kevin Smith (Ombersley) for best back 9, with 22 points, beating John Newey & James Dean (The Abbey) on the last hole! Chris Howles & Steve Brown (Churchill & Blakedown) won best front 9 with 23 points.

There were five 2s carded on the day, winning a sleeve of County Golf Balls. 2 of these were by Dave McGillivray, and one each by Andy Nicholson and Paul Judge. However, the best 2 of the day was an eagle on the 10th hole by Brain Morris, playing for the County Executive, for which he received two sleeves of golf balls!

A bacon bap was provided for the players before their game, and a formal two course meal was enjoyed after play. The catering, as always was superb, as was the welcome provided by all the bar and catering team.

On behalf of Stourbridge GC, Bob Grindley (Immediate Past Captain) welcomed everyone to the club and hoped everyone had enjoyed their game. In response, Dave McGillivray thanked Stourbridge GC for their support of the County and for hosting the event. Dave ran through some of the County highlights for 2019, and thanked all the clubs in the County for hosting events, and for supporting our tournaments and matches.
