Brian Heap shoots 69 gross to become Senior County Champion

45 of the best Senior County golfers assembled at Worcester G&CC on Monday 14th June 2021 to contest the County Senior Championship.
The weather was hot and sunny, and the course was in beautiful condition, and was a stern, but fair test for the players.
The format of the competition is that the gross winner becomes the County Champion, and winner of the Nevil Carroll Salver, and is invited to represent Worcestershire in the English Senior Champion of Champions Tournament, which is being held this year at Woodhall Spa GC on Saturday 11th & Sunday 12th September. There is also an excellent prize for best nett, The Denis Hayes Salver. Prizes are also awarded for best gross and best nett in three age categories - 55-59, 60-69 and 70+. A player may only win one prize.
In the gross Championship there were some early creditable scores, with Steve Carpeneter (Hagley) & Nigel Taylor (Redditch KIngfisher) posting 75s, 74s from Dave Marshall (The Worcestershire) & Anthony Hill (Moseley). Darron Henn (Gaudet Luce) shot an excellent 73, but this was beaten by a superb one under par 69 from Brian Heap (Worcester G&CC). When the ever steady Bill Thompson (Kings Norton) posted an excellent 70, it was clear that Brian would take a hard earned victory.
In the nett event, both Steve Carpenter (Hagley) & Neil Mallet (Warley Woods) posted level par 70s, and Darron Henn (Gaudet Luce) & Nigel Cowley (Worcester G&CC) posted 3 under par 67s, which were only beaten by Brian Heap's nett 65. With Brian already taking the gross prize, the two 67s came into play, with Nigel edging out Darron on countback.
Nigel Cowley (right) took the Denis Hayes Salver for best nett.
However, to make up for the disappointment of missing out on best nett, Darron was awarded a special prize of a dozen ProV1x in recognition of his hole in 1 on the 6th hole.
Darron Henn (right) congratulated by County President, Ian Rone, for his hole in one!
