Excellent Day At Bromsgrove Gc For County Senior 4Bbb Championship

Excellent day at Bromsgrove GC for County Senior 4BBB Championship
Steve Green (l) & Bill Thompson (r) receiving the Wharrad Jugs for best gross from Past County President Brian Morris.
The annual Worcestershire Senior 4BBB Tournament was held at Bromsgrove GC on Thursday 1st July. The course was in spectacular condition and built on it's reputation as one of Worcestershire's must play courses.
The event attracts players with a mixture of handicaps because of the prestigious prizes for both gross and nett winners. This year some 23 pairs set off with the hope of winning either the Wharrad Jugs, awarded for best gross score, or the Aberdovey Salvers for best nett score.
There was some excellent scoring and, in the gross category Bryan Swain (Stourbridge) & Steve Carpenter (Hagley) posted an early 70, which was later matched by Paul Newman (Worcester G&CC) & Mark Birchill (Kings Norton). Anthony Hill & Pete Desmond (both Moseley) posted a solid 69, and Nigel Taylor (Redditch Kingfisher) & his partner shot a level par 68, which was to take 2nd place. However, Bill Thompson (Kings Norton) & Steve Green (Rose Hill) were able to retain their crown with a 1 under par 67, and hold on to the Wharrad Jugs for another year.
The competition for the Aberdovey Salvers for best nett was an extremely close affair, with no less than 4 pairs returning nett 64s - Paul Newman (Worcester G&CC) & Mark Birchill (Kings Norton), Matthew Dale & Kevin Butler (both Bromsgrove), Grenville Rose & Robert Coe (both Worcester G&CC) and Mark Thomas (Droitwich) & Jim Leydon (Kings Norton). For a while it looked like a count back would decide the outcome, but a fantastic score of 60 was posted late on by the Bransford pair of Dave Hunt & Ron McIntosh-Gibbs, to take the trophies. Mark Thomas & Jim Leydon would take 2nd place on count back.
