Adam Norman (Moseley) wins the County Matchplay Title -18.7.21

Adam Norman (Moseley) becomes Worcestershire County 2021 Matchplay Champion at Stourbridge GC on Sunday 18th July 2021.

As in previous years the top 8 players from the County Strokeplay Championship, played at Hollywood GC earlier in the year, were drawn against each other to contest the Matchplay Championship. The quarter final matches are now played in advance of the finals day, and Shaun Roberts (Worcester G&CC) beat Giles Winthrop (also Worcester G&CC), Adam Norman (Moseley) beat Henry James (Kidderminster), Richard Sadler (Moseley) beat Scott Lane (Bewdley Pines) and Jake Kelly (Ombersley) edged home in a tight match against Nathan Slater (Bewdley Pines) to give us our semi-finalists.

The 4 players arrived at Stourbridge GC for their early morning tee times, and the day was already very warm, and would turn out to be one of the hottest days of the past few years,

The first semi-final. (L-R) Shaun Roberts, Brenda Binnie (Referee), Adam Norman.

After some high quality power golf, with Shaun driving the par 4 16th and Adam responding by driving the par 4 17th, the first semi-final swung Adam's way in the final stages, for a 3&1 victory.

The second semi-final (L-R) Richard Sadler, Tony Edwards (Referee), Jake Kelly

The 2nd semi-final was a close affair throughout, with both players leading at one time or another. As in most top quality matches, the outcome rested on the odd putt, and Richard Sadler edged home 2&1.

After a chance to get some refreshment and cool down a little, Adam and Richard set off in baking heat for the final, refereed by Brenda Binnie. Despite the ferocious conditions, the standard of golf was very high, and there was never more than 2 holes in it. However, once again the smallest margins were to make the difference, with a number of putts from both players shaving the hole. However, when Adam once again drove the 17th green, this time leaving himself a 10 foot eagle putt, he took the victory by 2&1.

Full Match Scores.

The County would like to thank Stourbridge GC for hosting the event. The course was in stunning condition, and the welcome and service from all the staff was second to none.

Finally thanks to the referees, Tony Edwards, and especially Brenda Binnie who managed to walk 36 holes in the incredible heat, to referee both a semi-final and final.
