Seniors finish 8th in EGU Qualifier

Seniors EGU Qualifier at Peterborough Milton GC 4th and 5th August 2021

The six seniors selected to play were all ready to go until Phil Shurmer and Dave Marshall were forced to self isolate after being contact traced. This was only a few days prior to the two day competition. A big thank you must go to Jim Leydon, who stepped in to ensure the team had the minimum of five players, but unfortunately, a sixth player couldn't be found in time from the seniors squad. Another big thank you must go to Paul Newman, who, on the second day made the journey, joined the team and ensured we had a team of six to complete the competition.

On day one, with all five scores to count, the pressure was on every player to perform at their best. The course was in magnificent condition. It was beautifully prepared with fast, true greens and the MGU certainly picked some tricky pin positions. This was also the case on day two, with the ironed greens being even faster. The first and last holes, both difficult in their own ways held some interesting stories for our players but everyone tried their hardest and the team finished in a creditable 8th place out of 10 counties, with improved overall scoring by the team on day two.

As always, the County fully supported our players magnificently. A special thank you must go to Stuart Pritchard, ably supported by Debbie, who were on hand throughout the two days to help the players as well as superbly organising the accommodation, food, etc.

Thank you to all the Worcestershire players for giving their time and for their superb efforts in representing the County Seniors in this prestigious EGU Qualifier. Congratulations to Warwickshire, the runaway winners, who go forward to represent the Midlands in the National finals this October. The MGU and all the midland counties wished them every success at the presentation ceremony as a midland senior senior has never won this national title so far.
