Thanks to the kind efforts of the KNGC Senior Captain, Ron Edwards, the County U14 Boys were hosted at Kings Norton GC for the annual challenge match against a hand-picked KNGC Seniors Team. The fixture is often used to blood new County players, and this year was no exception, with 4 of the team of 8 playing for a County Team for the first time -  Beau Langford (Moseley), Jack Price (Hollywood), Scott Froggatt (Gaudet Luce) and Alex McVeigh (Gaudet Luce) all winning their first cap (or in this case a County Tie!)

They were joined by Tom Gilbert (Halesowen), Jake Jeff-Johnston (Bromsgrove), Oliver Ansell (Bromsgrove) and Callum Jones (Bromsgrove) to make up 4 x 4BBB pairings to take on the very experienced KNGC Seniors players.

The first pair out were Jake (left) & Tom (right, playing against Steve Ianson (left) & Martin Evans (right). The boys got off to a strong start, winning the first 3 holes and continued to play some strong golf, using their shots well, and eventually ran out strong winners.

The second game was between Oliver (left) & Beau (right) and Tony O'Hare (far left) & Myk Price (far right). The game was a tighter affair than the first game, but some inspired putting by the boys, on the beautiful KNGC greens, allowed them to see off their opponents. The match was summed up by the boys 3 nett 2 on the very difficult par 4 16th hole (7th red) to close out the game!

Game 3 was between Jack (left) & Callum (right and Norman Oseland (far left) & Martin Thompson (far right). The tone for this match was set on the very first tee with young Callum hitting a drive 250 yards straight down the fairway, much to the Seniors consternation! With some excellent support from Jack's strong golf, the boys took the match with 2 holes to play.

The final game was to be between a brand new pairing of Scott (left) & Alex (right), against KNGC Senior Captain Ron Edwards (far right) & Rob Gough (far left). The two boys showed great composure throughout, putted beautifully and took full advantage of all their shots. The Seniors also played well, but after numerous consecutive pars they still found themselves losing ground to a string of nett birdies. The game went convincingly to the boys.

Overall, the boys enjoyed a solid win, but the most important part of the day was the experience gained by playing with some very experienced players. The boys were extremely grateful for the Seniors for giving their time and effort to host the match. All the boys will remember the match for many years to come.

The day ended with an excellent meal for all the players. On behalf of the Seniors, Ron passed on some very valuable tips and commented on the history and tradition of the great game.  In response, on behalf of the Boys, Jake thanked the organisers of the day Ron Edwards and U14 Team Manager Roger Martin,  Kings Norton GC, especially the greens staff, and the catering team for looking after everyone so well.

Both teams agreed that the fixture was a huge success and should continue again next year, and beyond.
