Worcestershire U16’s v Derbyshire U16’s

With the end of the 2021 season quickly approaching our U16 team travelled to Matlock GC to face Derbyshire for our rescheduled match.

The cold and drizzly conditions didn’t deter from the stunning views Matlock GC provided in the heart of the Peak District and with this gem of a course in such fine condition, it was always going to provide some spectacular golf.

The morning foursomes saw our opening pair of Phil Krone and Cassius Blake take on a very strong Derbyshire pair and they found themselves 2 down at the turn. However their never say die attitude saw them drag back the deficit and eventually take the lead for the first time on the 14th green, closing out their match on the 17th.

Next up was the pairing of Tom Blizzard and Tom Lennon who quickly got of to a flying start winning the first four holes. Even though their opponents fought back to be only 2 down at the turn, our boys never looked like letting up and also shook hands on the 17th with a 3&1 win.

Our 3rd pair of Ben Lazenby & Lewis Tolley came up against a strong Derbyshire pairing and couldn't turn their match around.

The dominance seen in the first two matches was on display in the fourth, the pairing of Mark Hewlett and Elliot Jones. With Elliot's big hitting and Mark's exquisite short game the boys dovetailed superbly. So much so when their match finished on the 13th green, the home team had only won two holes in their match.

Our final pair of Teddy Fee and debutant Alex Perry also got of to a dream start, winning the first two holes. Despite a spirited comeback, our boys showed such amazing fight and resilience to record a very commendable half against a pair considerably older than our anchor group.

We went into the afternoon singles ahead 3 1/2 to 1 1/2.

Two of our first three singles, quickly found themselves down but with two stunning eagles on the 11th and 14th, Phil Krone (our Captain for the day) stamped his authority on his match by leading his team to what was to be the second Worcestershire point in the afternoon. This was down to second out, Cassius Blake, taking full control of his match, shaking hands with his opponent just before Phil on the 16th.

Tom Blizzard at number three, found himself in a tough match, but his chip in for birdie on the first set the tone. Both players found birdies easy to come by and having played the 17 holes in 3 under, it was Tom who added to our overall tally.

Mark Hewlett at number 8, followed Tom in with another quick finish. His 8&6 win was to be the biggest of the day. Coupled with his 6&4 win in the morning, Mark only played 26 holes all day, but his outstanding performance left us needing just a half point for victory.

With three of our final four matches still playing, it was Elliot Jones who finally secured the win, finishing his match on the 17th green. After being 3 under through 5, Elliot was in total command, finding himself 5 up with 6 to play. However his opponent wasn’t giving up without a fight, winning two of the next three holes. Still, Elliot knew if he kept making par he’d eventually succeed and so he did, giving Worcestershire the 8.5 to 6.5 victory.
