Worcestershire U18s vs Staffordshire U18s

U18’s end league season with convincing win.

The sun was shining down on Halesowen GC who kindly hosted Thursday’s U18s league match against a good Staffordshire team. Having held numerous county events previously, course knowledge is such a huge advantage for our home team on this tricky course.

It was therefore imperative that our morning foursomes got off to a good start and our boys quickly proved that home advantage was to be a key factor throughout the day.

The first pairing of Cassius Blake alongside Tom Blizzard came up against a strong Staffs pairing and it proved to be a tight battle all morning, the Worcs pair just edging it 1up, the second pair of  Elliott Jones and George Stephens were in imperious form and controlled there match from the outset running out 3&2 winners. With another good half point from Tom Lennon and Tom Griffiths Worcs led 2.5 to 1.5 at lunch.

The Worcs top order totally dominated the afternoon singles with the first 5 matches all going Worcs’s way, led by Captain Cassius Blake (5&3). Followed by wins for Elliott Jones (5&4), George Stephens (4&2), Tom Blizzard (6&4) and the highlight being Birthday Boy Tom Lennon who drove the par 4 14th and holed a 15 foot putt for eagle on his way to a 3&1 win. There was a further win for Tom Griffiths (2&1) to round off a great win for Worcs, and end the league season on a high.

Result – Worcestershire 8.5 Staffordshire 3.5

Our thanks goes to everyone at Halsowen GC. The course was in immaculate condition, the catering staff for the excellent food. Special thanks must go to Luke Perry and Tom Waldron for all of their help and support on the day.
